(Atlantic) A big first-quarter run sparked Atlantic to a 78-41 win over Shenandoah in a Hawkeye Ten Conference boys basketball game at Atlantic on Thursday night.
The Trojans broke the game open in the first quarter with a 20-2 run and outscored the Mustangs 26-8. Atlantic senior Skyler Handlos averaging 17-points per game, sparked the run with 15-points. The Trojans knocked down nine three-point baskets in the first half and opened up a 51-22 lead at the break.
Braden Knight scored 15 of the Mustangs 22-first half points.
The Trojans outscored the Mustangs 32-19 in the second half with a running clock. Ten players scored for the Trojans. Handlos led the way with 25-points, Dayton Templeton, 10, Grant Sturm, 9, Craig Alan Becker, 8, Garrett Reynolds and Colton Rasmussen each scored 7-points, Caden Andersen, 4, Ethan Sturm and Keaton Juhl, three points each, and Ethan Williams chipped in 2.
Braden Knight, averaging 8-points per game, led the Mustangs with 19-points. Zach Foster 10, Blake Herrold, 5, Brody Owen, 3, Nolan Hunt, and Beau Gardner scored 2-points.
The Trojans notched their seventh win in eight games and moved to 10-6 overall. Atlantic travels to Clarinda on Friday night. Shenandoah falls to 2-19. The Mustangs square off against Red Oak in a Class 2A Substate 8 first-round game at Red Oak on Monday.
