(Atlantic) A Class 3A Substate Final will air on KSOM Monday evening. Familiar foes Denison-Schleswig and Harlan get together with the winner advancing to state.
The Cyclones are 17-6 while the Monarchs have a record of 15-8. Harlan’s path to the Substate Final includes a 62-59 overtime win over Atlantic followed by an 84-71 decision over Glenwood. Denison-Schleswig has ousted Creston 63-42 and #7 Winterset 53-38. This is the third meeting between these teams this season. On December 13th in Harlan the Cyclones won in overtime 68-60. On January 28th in Denison the Cyclones won 54-48.
Harlan is a seventeen time state qualifiers. Their most recent trip came in 2014. Denison-Schleswig has been to state five time, but hasn’t made it since 1986. This is their 2nd straight Substate Final appearance. Last year they lost to Winterset in the game to go to state.
Both teams rely heavily on some very quality seniors. For Denison-Schleswig, Goanar Biliew and Charlie Wiebers are multi-year starters. Biliew averages 15.6 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. He’s shooting 64.5% from the field and has blocked 68 shots on the season. Wiebers is a 1,000 point career scorer with an average of 17.3 points per game this season. He’s made 42 three-pointers and leads the team with 3.7 assists and 3.3 steals per game. Harlan’s top three scorers are all seniors with Connor Bruck (16.9/game), Michael Heithoff (11.9/game), and Johnathan Monson (11.5/game). Bruck is coming off of a career high 41 points against Glenwood. He made 20/20 free-throws in the Substate Semifinal win. Monson leads the team in rebounding at 8.9 per game.
