(Atlantic) Atlantic held off Underwood for a 2-1 win in a non-conference softball game at Atlantic on Friday.
The Trojans scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Madison Botos and Olivia Engler blasted back to back singles, and Lauren Nicholas walked to load the bases. Kennedy Goergen drew an RBI walk, and Maleana Woodward followed up with an RBI hit batter to give the home team a 2-0 advantage after five innings.
Underwood charged back in the top of the seventh. The Eagles loaded the bases and scored on Maddie Pierce’s RBI walk to close the gap (2-1). However, the Eagles threat ended on Payton Cooks ground out, and Atlantic escaped with the one-run win.
Atlantic scored two runs on six hits, and the Eagles scored one run on six hits. Allie Robertson went 3-3 at the plate to lead Underwood. Taylor Nelson stroked two singles, and Erin McMain accounted for the other Underwood hit.
Kennedy Goergan went 2-2 at the plate with an RBI walk to lead the Trojan offense. Alyssa Derby, Madison Botos, Olivia Engler, and Abby Smith each hit singles.
Olivia Engler picked up the win in the circle for the Trojans. Sierra Fox took the loss.
Atlantic extends their record to 13-1 on the season. The Trojans face Shenandoah in the final conference game of the shortened season on Tuesday night. A win would give the Trojans sole possession of the Hawkeye Ten Conference title.
