(Harlan) The Shelby County Board of Supervisors received several department updates and approved the county’s multi-jurisdictional hazard mitigation plan during its recent meeting.
Jay Ring, Shelby County Weed Commissioner, presented his annual report for approval. The board unanimously approved the report.
Ring also reminded landowners to post no-spray signs at both ends of their properties where passing motorists can see them. He encouraged landowners to notify the Shelby County Engineer’s Office of no-spray locations.
Geralyn Greer presented the Recorder’s Office quarterly report, which showed revenues similar to the same period last year. The board unanimously approved the report.
Greer also reminded residents that recreational vehicle registration renewals are due by December 31 to avoid penalties. The Recorder’s Office mailed purple postcards to owners as a reminder. Residents can also sign up for free notifications through Iowa Land Records. More information is available on the Shelby County Recorder’s Office page.
Curtis Schnack, deputy director of the Shelby County Conservation Board, reported that summer camps were filled to capacity. The department’s annual trick-or-treating event continues to grow in popularity, drawing approximately 1,200 attendees this year, not including volunteers.
Schnack also announced an archery range at Nishna Bend on the east end of the property.
Kenny Hansen, Shelby County Emergency Medical Services director, provided a first-quarter update, reporting 430 calls. Hansen said the county purchased new equipment using grant funding. He is also awaiting a decision on a grant application for a Mobile Integrated Health Pilot program.
The board unanimously approved Resolution 2026-28, adopting the Shelby County Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan.
Supervisors also unanimously approved a motion by Kolbe, authorizing the budget director to advertise a public hearing on the proposed fiscal year 2027 Budget Amendment No. 1.
The public hearing is scheduled for 9:05 a.m. November 3, 2026, in the Supervisors’ Chambers at 612 Court Street in Harlan.
