(Atlantic) Atlantic Head Coach Joe Brummer says the team is preparing for a Greene County squad that runs many different formations. The 4-2 Trojans host 3-3 Greene County. Atlantic is 2-0 in district play, and the Rams are 1-1.
The Trojans are again in the playoff hunt with three district games remaining on the schedule. The Trojans topped Creston 28-0, and downed Perry last week, 33-7. Coach Brummer says the point of emphasis is keeping the team focused on their goals.
The game features Atlantic’s running game and Greene County’s passing attack. The Trojans have rushed for 1,462 yards and passed for 461. The Rams have thrown for 975 yards and rushed for 743. The Rams have an outstanding athlete in Trevon Keely, a wide receiver and cornerback. Keely is one of Greene County’s premier two-sport athletes. On the track, he’s a two-time Class 1A state high jump champion with a personal best of 6-8, and he’s also a state-place-winning sprinter and long jumper. On the football field, Keely has been a big-play threat at receiver and on returns, including becoming the only Greene County player to return kickoffs for touchdowns in consecutive games. Coach Brummer says the key is to try and contain Keely and limit the big play.
The Trojans also have explosive capabilities. Tailback Ethan McNeal has one 94-yard kickoff return this season and is third in Class 3A with 13 rushing touchdowns. Benny McLaren has returned one kickoff for 74 yards. Receiver Zander Killion has a 42-yard touchdown catch-and-run. Meanwhile, the Trojans’ all-underclassmen offensive line has steadily improved throughout the season.
Turnovers will be another key on Friday night. The Trojans have 13 takeaways with seven fumble recoveries and six interceptions. Greene County has similar numbers with seven fumble recoveries and five interceptions.
We will broadcast the game on KS95.7 and live stream on westerniowatoday.com.
