(Creston, IA) — Atlantic softball competed in the John Stephens Classic in Creston on Friday.
In the first game, the Trojans won a wild 10-9 game in 8 innings against Bondurant Farrar.
Trailing 2-1, Atlantic scored four times in the bottom of the 5th highlighted by a RBI double by Jillian Saathoff and Makenna Schroeder to take a 5-2 lead.
The Blue Jays scored once in the 6th and loaded the bases in the top of the 7th and Mallory Nikkel hit a two run single to tie the game at 5-5. After the next batter popped out, Nikayla Davis got a base hit and two runs scored to give B-F a 7-5 lead.
Atlantic needed to rally and they did — Zoey Kirchhoff led off the inning with a double and moved to third on Kinsley Johnson’s single. Saathoff drove in Kirhhoff with a RBI grounder and Johnson moved to 2nd base and the lead was cut to 7-6. Claire Schroder struck out but Schroeder tied the game at 7-7 with a RBI double.
Bondurant Farrar came back to score two runs in the top of the 8th off Trojan starter Peyton McLaren to retake a 9-7 lead. McLaren led off the bottom of the 8th with a triple and Lila Wiederstein tied the game with a 2 run HR. Atlantic was not done — London Kirchhoff doubled and Zoey Kirchhoff walked. Saathoff reached on an error and London came around to score the game winning run and the Trojans improved to 14-2 on the season.
Atlantic will play Ankeny later on Friday afternoon.
