(Des Moines) The Iowa Department of Insurance and Financial Services is warning residents to watch out for scams and dishonest contractors as communities recover from recent severe weather.
Homeowners are urged to document damage before any major cleanup or repairs. They should contact their insurance company and be cautious of unsolicited offers from contractors.
These contractors target residents immediately after various natural disasters and claim to work for FEMA or be sent by an insurance company. The most common scammers are so-called “storm chasers” who collect money upfront and never finish the job.
Suspected scams can be reported to the Iowa Attorney General’s Office at (888) 777-4590. More information and resources are on the Iowa Fraud Fighters website.
