Semifinals
Class 5A
#1 Johnston 49 #5 Ankeny 39 — It was win number 78 in a row for the Dragons as their defense held the Hawks scoreless for the final 3:44 of the game. Johnston (26-0) was leading 43-39 when Jenica Lewis made the play of the game on defense — Jayla Williams for Ankeny had a clear path to the basket but Lewis reached around and tipped the ball off of Williams and out of bounds. Lewis led the offense too with 22 points plus added 8 rebounds. Williams had 20 points for Ankeny (16-9).

#3 Waukee Northwest 56, #2 Dowling 50 (OT) — The Wolves dominated the Maroons in overtime to win the rubber match between the two teams. Dowling’s Katie Muller tied the game at 44-44 with 14 seconds left in regulation and Waukee’s last second shot was off the mark. With the scored tied 46-46 in the OT, Vana Bilic made two free throws to give the Wolves the lead for good. After a Dowling miss, Sadie McCann made a driving lay up to make it a two score game. Trailing 52-47, Muller hit a three pointer with 14 seconds left but the Wolves hit four straight free throws to put the game away. Romey Croatt led Waukee Northwest (19-5) with 12 points while Ellie Muller had 17 for Dowling (21-4).

Class 3A
#1 Mount Vernon 53 #4 Dubuque Wahlert 49 — The 3A defending champions will get a chance to go back to back after fending off a rally from the Golden Eagles. Mount Vernon led 30-16 at the half and were up 36-25 in the third quarter when Wahlert went on a 11-0 run to tie the game until Taylor Franck hit a lay up at the buzzer to lead 38-25. Mount Vernon scored the first 5 points of the 4th quarter to give them some separation and they held the lead the rest of the way. Mount Vernon (24-2) was led by Savanna Wright with 24 points while Wahlert (19-6) was led by Emily Tanny with 18 points.

#2 Maquoketa 61, #3 Des Moines Christian 54 — The Cardinals rallied in the 2nd half to advance to the 3A finals. Maquoketa (23-4) trailed 31-23 at the half and were down by as many as 14 in the 3rd quarter before they made their move. A 13-4 run at the end of the third period got Maquoketa to only down 45-40. Hadley Ihrig hit a go ahead three pointer at the 3:08 mark of the 4th quarter that was part of a 10-1 run to take a 58-51 lead which shut the door on DMC. Cora Widel led Maquoketa with 18 points while Des Moines Christian (23-4) was led by Reese DeVooght with 17.

Class 4A
#2 Dallas Center Grimes 47, #3 Norwalk 42 — The Mustangs won the rubber match over the Warriors with one of the more crazier finishes in state tournament. Norwalk (22-3) led 12-5 after the first quarter as DCG was just 1 of 11 from the field. Norwalk kept the lead until late into the 4th quarter — they were up 42-36 with 46 seconds left when Makenna Roeder missed two free throws. Ava Smid made a short jumper for the Mustangs and after a Warrior turnover, Smid got a lay up with 32 seconds left to cut the lead to two. Another Norwalk turnover resulted in another Smid lay-up; the Warriors coughed it up again and Smid made the go ahead shot with 21 seconds remaining. A technical foul was later called on Norwalk and DCG finished the game on an 11-0 run to win it. Smid would lead Dallas Center Grimes (23-2) with 16 points.

#5 Carlisle 73, #1 Bishop Heelan 60 — It was the Macy Comito show for the Wildcats as the first number one seed fell at the girls state tournament and Carlisle advances to the state finals for the first time in school history. The Iowa St. recruit erupted with 42 points for Carlisle on 12 of 22 shooting including 5 of 9 from three point land. She was also a perfect 13 of 13 from the charity stripe. Carlisle (25-1) led 15-11 after one quarter, 33-22 at the half and 57-41 through three quarters. Carlisle is in the state tournament for the first time since 2015 when they made it the 4A semifinals and lost to Harlan. Heelan ended their season at 24-1.

#2 Rock Valley 43, #7 Iowa City Regina 31 — The Rockets only led 29-27 at the end of the third quarter but Haevyn Ranschau hit a three pointer to start the final period and it sparked a 12-2 run that lasted most of the 4th to give Rock Valley the win. Ranschau was only 3 of 15 on her three point shots but she led Rock Valley (23-2) with 15 points and they go to the semifinals after losing to Hinton in the first round last year. The Regals end their season at 19-6 after losing to the Blackhawks in the semis last year

#6 Treynor 62, #3 Central Lyon 50 — The Cardinals provided the biggest upset at the state tournament thus far. Trailing 19-14 after the first quarter, Treynor went on a 8-2 run to start the 2nd period to take a 22-21 lead. After a back and forth where the lead changed hands six times, the Cardinals went up 31-30 to leading 37-32 at the half. The Cardinals went on a 9-2 run to start the 2nd half to lead by 12 and pushed their lead to 54-41 at the end of three quarters and Central Lyon never got the deficit under double digits. Nora Konz led Treynor (22-2) with 20 points, Addison Mauer chipped in 18 points and Clarie Schrage added 14. Treynor won despite being outrebounded 36-29 — the Lions had 17 offensive rebounds but only shot 32 percent from the field and 3 of 15 on their three point shots. Central Lyon’s season ends at 19-5; Treynor will face Rock Valley in the 2A semifinals on Friday at 11:45 am.

Class 1A
#1 Bishop Garrigan 64, #8 Kee, Lansing 42 — Graclyn Eastman led the Golden Bears with 24 points in a dominating first round win. Kee was only 2 of 17 from the field in the first quarter and fell behind 16-5 and could never make up ground, falling to 17-8 on the season. After missing the tournament a year ago. Bishop Garrigan moves to the semifinals and is seeking its third ever state championship.

#5 Dunkerton 60, #4 Lynnville Sully 39 — After losing in the first round a year ago, the Raiders rolled into the semifinals this season over the Hawks thanks to the outside shooting of Ava Fuelling. The Junior only averages 7.5 points per game but she hit 6 of 9 from three point land and poured in 22 points. Kylee Pexa added 14 for Dunkerton (23-2) who will meet top seeded Bishop Garrigan in the semifinals on Friday at 1:30 pm. Lynnville Sully ended their season at 24-1.

#2 Newell Fonda 77, #7 Saint Ansgar 58 — Newell Fonda advances to the semifinals for the 9th straight year. The Saints had a 15-9 lead in the first quarter and then the Mustangs turned a switch on and went on a 10-0 run to take control of the game. Up eight in the third quarter, they went on a 9-0 run and never looked back from there. Newell Fonda (23-2) was led by Ellie Sievers with 18 points and Quinn Sievers added 17 points. The Mustangs were 10 of 17 from three point land. Saint Ansgar finishes their season at 20-5.

Tuesday, March 3
First Round
Class 3A
#3 Des Moines Christian 52, #6 Forest City 46 — DMC was leading 48-46 but Lexi Isebrand for the Indians missed a go ahead three in the corner and Addy Oetker hit two free throws for the Lions to make it a two possession game and that was enough to move Des Moines to the semifinals. Reese DeVooght led Des Moines Christian (23-3) with 23 points. Forest City ends their season at 22-4.

Class 4A
#2 Dallas Center Grimes 59, #7 Waverly Shell Rock 39 — The 2023 champs advanced to the semifinals scoring the game’s first eight points and never trailing. Macy Meyer led DCG (22-2) with 17 points including hitting all three of her three pointers. The Go Hawks did have 19 points from Lizzy Frazell but their season ends at 22-2.

#3 Norwalk 50, #6 Central DeWitt 37 — In a first round rematch, the Warriors pulled away from the Sabers late and goes to the semifinals for the second straight year. Sophomore Braylyn Birmingham led Norwalk (22-2) with a double double — 26 points and 10 rebounds. She was a perfect 10 of 10 from the free throw line as Norwalk advanced to face Hawkeye Ten rival Dallas Center Grimes in the semifinals on on Thursday, March 5 at 5:00 pm. Central DeWitt finishes their season at 23-2.

#1 Bishop Heelan 81, #8 North Polk 56 — The top seeded Crusaders used a hot shooting Melina Snoozy to storm past the Comets in the first round. Snoozy hit 39 points which is tied for 8th most in a single game in Iowa 5 on 5 history. The Junior was 17 of 26 shooting including 5 of 8 from three point land and added 13 rebounds. Heelan (24-0) is in the state tournament for the 7th time in the last 8 years but has not won a state title since 2010. North Polk ends their season at 20-4.

#5 Carlisle 58, #4 Clear Creek Amana 44 — The Wildcats get the upset as they used a 14-0 run from the end of the first quarter into the 2nd period to take control of the Clippers. Carlisle (24-1) had four players in double figures led by Mallie Stoner with 16 points. Carlisle won despite going 3 of 12 on their three point shooting. CCA ends their season at 20-3.

Class 2A
#1 Hinton 46, #8 West Lyon 45 — Two free throws by Addison Glass with 32 seconds left were the difference for the Blackhawks to survive an upset from the Wildcats. West Lyon’s Katelyn Berentschot’s shot in the lane was blocked by Keely DeRochie with 3 seconds left. Sydney Doeschot led Hinton (21-1) with 15 points while Keely Derochie added 14. West Lyon’s season ends at 17-8.

#4 Denver 45, #5 Emmetsburg 42 — The E-Hawks led 21-13 at the half but the Cyclones came back to take the lead in the 3rd quarter 34-28. Emmetsburg came back on a 9-2 run to lead 37-36 when Denver’s Channing Johnson went to the line, made the first free throw, missed the 2nd but the rebound came right back to her and she laid it up and in for a three point play. Emmetsburg tied it at 37-37 with 1:05 left but Mylee Thurm answered with a lay up with 49 seconds left and that turned out to be the game winner. Johnson led Denver (23-2) with 22 points while Rachel Schany had 16 points for Emmetsburg (23-3).

First Round
Class 5A
#1 Johnston 54, #8 Ankeny Centennial 30 — The top seeded Dragons won their 77th game in a row by eliminating the Jaguars in a rematch of last year’s semifinals. Notre Dame recruit Jenica Lewis led the way with 13 points while Adaya Phillips and Kelli Kalb each added 10. Johnston led 27-14 at the half and extended the lead with a 13-5 third quarter. Johnston (25-0) is trying to win their third state title in a row and 4th in five years. Centennial ends their season at 12-12.

#5 Ankeny 57, #4 Cedar Rapids Washington 44 — The Hawks outscored the Warriors 21-7 in the 4th quarter to win their first round game. Jayla Williams led Ankeny with 18 points while Kayla Schaapyeld and Reagan Baldwin each added 15. Ankeny (16-8) had 12 three pointers in the game. Cedar Rapids Washington ends their season at 18-5. Both teams were making their first state tournament appearance since 2013. Ankeny will play Johnston in the Semifinals on Thursday, March 5 at 10:00 am.

#2 Dowling 55, #7 Valley 48 — The Maroons led by as much as 9 in the third quarter but the Tigers cut the lead to one in the 4th quarter 46-45 with 4:36 left but could never quite take the lead. Leading 49-47, Dowling went on a 6-1 run to end the game. The Maroons (21-3) were led by Adrienne Sears with 24 points and advance to the championship game for the second year in a row. Valley (13-11) was led by Tylee Weite with 13 points.

#3 Waukee Northwest 80, #6 Iowa City West 49 — The Wolves rolled to the semifinals for the 2nd year in a row. Sadie McCann led the way with 18 points on 8 of 11 shooting as Northwest led 16-8 after one quarter and 37-15 at the half. Waukee NW (18-5) will now face conference rival Dowling in the 5A Semifinals on Thursday, March 5 at 11:45 am — the two teams split their regular season meetings. The Trojans finish the season at 17-8.

#1 Mount Vernon 55, #8 Cherokee Washington 44 — The 3A defending champs scored the first 8 points of the game and never trailed to eliminate the Braves. Sophomore Quinn Pershing led the Mustangs with 21 points going 6 of 9 from three point land. Mount Vernon (23-2) went an impressive 11 of 26 on their three point shots. Cherokee finished their season at 20-4.

#4 Dubuque Wahlert 56, #5 Williamsburg 47 — Emily Tanny led the Golden Eagles into the semifinals with 30 points — the freshman was 12 of 13 from the free throw line and 8 of 19 from the field with two three pointers. After the Raiders scored the first two points, Wahlert went on a 9-0 run and never let go of the lead. Dubuqe Wahlert (19-5) were runners up a year ago while Williamsburg (20-6) lost to the Golden Eagles last year in the semifinals.

#2 Maquoketa 57, #7 Mediapolis 23 — The Cardinals led 30-14 at the half and did not allow the Bulldogs back in the game, only allowing 4 points in the third quarter. Audrey Kroyman led Maquoketa (22-4) with 19 points getting all her points inside the arc. Mediapolis (24-1) was making its 23rd overall state tournament appearance but its first since 2015.
