(Atlantic) The goal for every Iowa high school football team is to be competitive at this stage of the season. Atlantic is in an excellent position, currently standing at 5-2 overall, 3-0 in district play, and vying for a playoff spot against Harlan this Friday night.
Atlantic Head Coach Joe Brummer says this is where teams want to be this time of year, and playing in relevant football games.
The running game drives the Trojans’ unblemished district record. The Trojans have rushed for 1,851 yards, averaging 7.2 yards per carry. The Trojans are led by a trio of backs: Ethan McNeal, 1061 yards; Gavin McLaren, 470, averaging 7.3 yards per carry; and Zander Killion, 205 yards. The Trojans averaged 12.9 per carry last week against Greene County.
Coach Brummer credits the offensive line for the team’s success in running, led by seniors Jack Muller, Donovan Hedrington, and Kael Cameron, as well as sophomores Travin Thomas and Owen Miller, and junior Roland Hinman.
The Trojans will face a significant challenge against the Harlan Cyclones, who enter the game with a 2-1 district record and a 3-4 overall record. Coach Brummer says Coach Bladt does an excellent job, having won multi-state championships both as a player and a Coach.
The Trojans have faced some outstanding quarterbacks this season. Friday night will be no exception. Cyclones quarterback Gabe Arkfeld has completed 54.1 percent of his passes for 1,116 yards and eleven touchdowns. The senior signal caller has also rushed for 153 yards.
Atlantic’s defense is playing lights out, holding Perry and Greene County to just seven points over the last two games.
