(Iowa City, IA) – The Iowa Hawkeyes are headed to the Cheez-IT Citrus Bowl for their 36th bowl game appearance. This will be the third time that Iowa has been in the Citrus Bowl.
Overall, Iowa sits at 1-1 in the Citrus Bowl, last winning in the bowl on January 1st, 2005 where they beat LSU 30-25. Their last appearance was against Kentucky on January 1, 2022, where they lost 20-17 on a Kentucky fourth-quarter touchdown. Iowa is 1-2 against Tennessee in program history, with Tennessee winning their only bowl game against Iowa in 2015, 18-16. Iowa won in the first-ever meeting 28-22 in the 1982 Peach Bowl.
Iowa’s bowl history against SEC opponents is 7-6 which marks the fourth time in five years where the Hawkeyes will take on an SEC opponent in a bowl game. In the last five bowl games, the Hawkeyes have won four of them as they lost against Kentucky in the Music City Bowl just last year.
Iowa is 18-16-1 in all-time in bowl games and is eligible for the 22nd time in the last 23 seasons under head coach Kirk Ferentz. They are 10-9 in bowl games under Ferentz. Only Ohio State and Wisconsin have won more bowl games than Iowa.
The Hawkeyes will have some off time until they see the Cheeze-IT Bowl as they will take on Tennessee on New Year’s Day at 12:00 p.m.
