(Treynor, IA) – The Cardinals continue to stay on the winning path after they beat West Sioux last Friday 31-13. This win wouldn’t have come without a total team effort overall. Treynor carried over their effort in practice from the beginning to the end of the game as they now advance further into the playoffs.
Ben Casey had one of the best games of his season as he passed for 282 yards and went 17-22 for four touchdowns. Karson Elwood was Casey’s primary receiver as he had 216 receiving yards. Head coach Jeff Casey credits the blocking upfront with allowing the open routes downfield that led to the successful passing game in the Cardinals’ favor.
In the defensive game, Treynor saw a great defensive effort from the whole defense overall. Two players that stand out statistically were Brady Phelps and Peter Young. Phelps had a total of nine tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss in the game. Young had seven tackles and half a tackle for loss to help in the defensive effort for Treynor. These two could not have done the job alone as the defense held West Sioux to just 13 points and forced a turnover with the interception by Karson Elwood.
This week, Treynor takes on OABCIG this Friday night in the second round of playoff action. The Falcons are primarily an offensive team that likes to put the ball in the air and put it deep. In nine games this season, there are six players who have had 18 or more receptions on the offensive side. They will have to halt the momentum of quarterback Brysen Kolar as he passed for 358 yards and had six touchdowns against Shenandoah. The way to stop him is in the secondary as the junior threw three interceptions against Shenandoah. There are a lot of targets to cover downfield, and Treynor needs to be right on the bullseye.
While the team continues to play consistently, the game plan continues to change in little ways. The goal this week is to just move the chains and convert on every third-down opportunity given to Treynor.
Treynor travels to OABCIG on Friday with a kickoff at 7:00 p.m.
