(Atlantic) The Atlantic City Council on Wednesday discussed and approved the dates for legally shooting off fireworks in the City of Atlantic City. Atlantic City Administrator John Lund stated that he discussed a proposal with Atlantic Police Chief Devin Hogue to allow fireworks to be set off within city limits on July 2, July 3, and July 4.
Lund says the Council retains discretion over fireworks, including whether they are permitted and the hours of use. Atlantic City Councilman Mike McDermott says he has had numerous calls for and against. The discussion centered on whether to allow the extra day on July 2 or July 5.
Atlantic Mayor Rob Clausen admitted he does not have a vote; however, he does have an opinion.
City Councilman Jim Brehres said the complaints he has received are about the amount of litter on the streets and in people’s homes.
Following the discussion, the Council voted to allow fireworks from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on July 2, July 3, and July 4.
Consumers can ignite fireworks on private property. The ordinance bans people visibly intoxicated or under the influence of narcotics from setting off fireworks. Anyone releasing these devices is responsible for their operation, flight, and consequences.
The ordinance also states that no person under the age of 18 shall discharge DOT 1.4 class fireworks without adult supervision. The law bans the discharge of fireworks within 300 feet of a hospital or long-term care facility. Consumers must follow the directions on the package, and sky lanterns without a tether rope are strictly prohibited.
