(Cumberland) On Monday, officials announced Iowa’s second case of bird flu identified in a commercial turkey flock in northwest Iowa. The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed Monday the case in Buena Vista County, about 100 miles north of the previous point, identified in a backyard flock of 42 ducks and chickens on March 1 in Pottawattamie County.
Iowa District 11 Senator Tom Shipley appearing at Saturday’s Legislative Coffee at the Cumberland Fire Station, stated the hope is these incidents are isolated and contained. ”

The Nodaway lawmaker says we’ve seen this happen before, and he hopes this will not happen again. Senator Shipley pointed to the 2015 outbreak in Iowa leading to the death of 32.7 million laying hens, turkeys, and other birds. Officials reported about 50.5 million birds were destroyed across the nation, the worst outbreak on record.
