(Atlantic) Five people are taking legal action against the Atlantic Community School District and a former school teacher, alleging the district failed to protect students from inappropriate behavior.
According to KCCI, the lawsuit was filed by four former students and one minor against the district and former teacher Jesse McCann.
The plaintiffs allege McCann engaged in inappropriate conduct and unwanted touching while working in the district between 2021 and 2026.
The lawsuit also claims McCann had a history of inappropriate conduct involving students at West Central Valley Community School District. It further alleges Atlantic school officials failed to conduct a background check before hiring him, properly investigate complaints, or remove him from his position in a timely manner.
It is unclear when proceedings in the civil lawsuit will begin.
McCann was arrested by Atlantic police on charges of sexual exploitation by a school employee and grooming. His jury trial in that case is scheduled for December 8th.
In a separate case, McCann was arrested by Stuart police on a charge of sexual exploitation by a school employee. That jury trial is scheduled for January 19th.
