(Des Moines, Iowa) Multiple rounds of heavy rain are expected across Iowa this week, increasing the potential for flooding and river flooding.
The National Weather Service in Des Moines issued a Flood Watch through 1 a.m. Friday. The watch was expanded southeast, with rainfall amounts shifting farther south.
Forecasters say some areas could receive 2 to 4 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts possible. The heaviest rainfall is expected overnight Wednesday, although additional rounds of rain will move across the state throughout the week.
Area creeks and streams are already running high and could flood with additional heavy rainfall. Flooding concerns are expected to increase with each round of rain.
Additional rainfall is expected to linger across southern Iowa Thursday night.
The National Weather Service urges residents to remain weather-aware and use caution around flooded areas. Motorists should never drive across flooded roads and should remember, “Turn around, don’t drown.”
