(Cleveland, OH) — A health expert is raising awareness about the deadliest form of skin cancer, melanoma. Cleveland Clinic dermatologist Jennifer Lucas says the longer melanoma has to grow, the harder it is to treat.
Lucas says see a skin doctor if you flag any skin spots that are uneven, have irregular borders or vary in color. A spot that’s bigger than the tip of a pencil eraser also raises concern.
Data shows just about all cases can be cured if caught early.
Melanoma can be caused by exposure to the sun.
One in five Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70, making it the most common cancer. The American Cancer Society says it’s important to note that this disease is highly preventable by using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, reapplying it every two hours, wearing a hat in the sun and avoiding indoor tanning.
