NEWTON, Iowa — Sam Mayer triumphed in the Hy-Vee Perks 250 at Iowa Speedway, managing tires and tensions to secure his second win of the season and sixth of his career. Mayer’s No. 1 JR Motorsports Chevrolet edged out Riley Herbst’s No. 98 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford by 0.146 seconds in an overtime finish.
Mayer started fifth after rain canceled qualifying and took the lead when John Hunter Nemechek crashed on Lap 245, causing the race to extend three laps beyond its scheduled distance. In the final stretch, Mayer and Herbst battled side-by-side, but Mayer maintained his lead to the end.
Corey Heim achieved a career-best third-place finish, while Sammy Smith and Sheldon Creed completed the top five. Notable performances included Chandler Smith, who led 131 laps but fell to 12th due to short-run speed issues, and Austin Hill, who finished 29th after a cut tire led to a crash on Lap 218. Hill’s result dropped him to third in the series standings, behind Cole Custer and Chandler Smith.
