(Iowa City, IA) – The Iowa Hawkeyes and Nebraska Huskers have their last regular season game coming up early Friday afternoon in Lincoln. This will be the 54th meeting between the Hawkeyes and the Huskers as Nebraska leads the series 30-20-3.
Iowa has recently just clinched the Big Ten West division title as they won over Illinois last week. The Hawkeyes have had a very good November as they are 17-1 in their last 18 games in November, dating back to the 2019 season. Iowa’s defense has been one of the best in the nation as they rank third nationally, giving up just 12.4 points per game. They have given up just four touchdowns over the last 28 quarters and just 12 overall touchdowns this season. The Hawkeyes have won their last five matchups against the Huskers in Lincoln as they have continued to see a virtue of success. Five Hawkeyes have earned Big Ten weekly honors so far this season including Sebastian Castro, Cooper DeJean, Nick Jackson, Tory Taylor, and Drew Stevens.
Nebraska is 10-7 overall on Black Friday games since the 1990 season as they are 1-5 in the series against Iowa on Black Friday. The Huskers have continued to utilize a plethora of quarterbacks this season as they have had three starting quarterbacks over the course of the season. This marks the first time since 2013 that Nebraska has had three different quarterbacks to start in games in one season. Rover Isaac Gifford has been one of the top defensive backs this season as he has racked up 75 tackles this year. That is the most tackles for a Huskers since Nathan Gerry had 79 in 2015.
The Hawkeyes have won seven of the last eight games against the Huskers as all of the last five games have been within five points or less. Kirk Ferentz actually played his first game as head coach of the Hawkeyes in 1999. This series began in 1891 with a 22-0 Iowa victory, something that they are trying to pull off on Friday.
