(Des Moines) Iowa House District #23 Representative Ray Sorensen reports that the House Economic Growth and Technology Committee passed the proposed Consumer Data Protection bill to the floor.
The Greenfield Republican says the proposed bill is a framework of protection for online consumer data and guidelines and rules for controlling that data. It’s one of those issues that the Federal Government should be working on, but for now, Iowa and a handful of other states are pushing forward their draft of what a federal version could look like. Sorensen says it is a large bill with many definitions and will be one of those works in progress until its implementation in 2025. “Still, for now, there is a consensus agreement and understanding amongst nearly all industry leaders in technology to get that framework into place and then amend it if necessary to fit the ever-changing technology landscape,” said Sorensen.
Consumer data protection refers to the measures and practices put in place to safeguard the personal information of individuals who use goods and services provided by businesses or organizations.
This personal information can include names, contact details, financial data, health information, and other sensitive data. Businesses must ensure that the data collected from their consumers is used only for the intended purposes and is not accessed or used by unauthorized individuals or entities.
Consumer data protection aims to ensure that the data is not misused or abused and that individuals have control over how their data is collected, stored, and used. This can be achieved by implementing policies, practices, and technologies that protect consumer data’s confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Overall, consumer data protection is essential to ensure that businesses maintain the trust of their customers, protect their privacy, and avoid legal and financial consequences associated with data breaches and mishandling of personal data.
