(Anita) CAM trailing 12-8 at the half, scored five straight touchdowns in the second half and topped Fremont-Mills 46-20 in an 8-player second-round playoff game.
Lane Spieker carried the ball 36-times for 327-yards and scored six touchdowns to lead CAM. Colby Rich caught three passes for 91 yards and a touchdown. Joe Kaufman had 15 tackles and eight solo stops to lead the defense. Braxton Blackburn carried the ball 21 times for 55-yards, and Taylor Reed caught three passes for 98-yards to lead Fremont-Mills.
The Knights slowed down the pace of the game early and struck first on Blackburn’s 13-yard run. The Cougars answered early in the second quarter on a Lane Spieker, five-yard TD run. CAM converted on the two-point conversion and grabbed an 8-6 lead. The Knights responded quickly on a 45-yard TD throw from Jake Malcom to Taylor Reed to put Fremont-Mills back up 12-8 at the half.
“We told our players at halftime to relax,” said CAM Head Coach Barry Bower. “I think they were a little uptight coming out and got smacked in the mouth. But Fremont-Mills also showed us some things we weren’t expecting. We had to adapt and adjust, take our time, we’re going to be alright, and let the play-makers make some plays and things of that nature.”
CAM fired right back early in the third quarter. Spieker threw his 11th touchdown pass of the season to Colby Rich to move ahead 14-12 in the first 27 seconds of the second half.
“Coming out and popping a score right away in the second half proved to be a big momentum swing for us,” said Coach Bower.
The home team started running and throwing downhill for the rest of the contest. Spieker scored on runs of 38, 5, 36, and 31 yards to open up a 40-12 lead.
Jake Malcom targeted Taylor Reed on a 13-yard TD pass with 2:38 to go in the contest to narrow the gap to 40-20.
Lane Spieker capped off his second-half scoring binge with a 57-yard TD run, and CAM finished off the night with a 46-20 victory and home-field in the quarterfinals against Newell-Fonda on Thursday night. We will have the broadcast on 95.7 FM. Pregame starts at 6:30. The kick-off is at 7:00 p.m.
