(Lewis) The search and rescue operation at the Turkey Creek Bridge near Lewis ended after an unusual set of circumstances.
Cass County Deputy Kyle Quist tells KSOM/KS95 News a deputy responded to the Turkey Creek bridge northeast of Lewis a little before 6:00 p.m. on Sunday after a passerby spotted a stroller sitting on the side of the Highway. Quist said the caller followed a trail to the creek bed and noticed evidence of someone who had been by the water. Quist said there was some blood found in the area, which triggered suspicion. He says a couple of other items were located, which seemed odd which triggered the investigation.
Deputy Quist says through the investigation; they located the individual who had been at the scene earlier along with other people associated with the incident. The parties accidentally left the stroller near the bridge when they left. “There were a lot of people called out for something simple like this, but at the same time, we have to take all of the precautions,” said Quist.
The agencies involved with the investigation include Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Atlantic Police Department, State Conservation, Cass County EMA, Atlantic Fire, Cass County, and Shelby County Drone teams, Cass County K9, Shelby County EMA, and the SWI Regional Dive Team.
Deputy Quist also thanked the Cass County Communications Dispatchers. “Without them, large-scale events like this would not run smoothly,” said Quist. “We have quality dispatchers, and because of that, not only was this event happening, but there were multiple calls across the county and city for other situations they were dealing with, and they did an excellent job.”
Quist says no charges have been filed at this time.
