(Denison) Iowa State Patrol Trooper and Public Information Officer Shelby McCreedy remind motorists to watch out for the varmints.
Trooper McCreedy passes along some safety tips when dealing with wildlife on the roadways. McCreedy says deer cause the most crashes, raccoons are second, dogs are number three, turkeys come in at number four, and coyotes are number 5.
Most deer crashes occur in West Virginia, followed by Montana, Pennsylvania, and South Dakota. Iowa is fifth. McCreedy says there are more than 30,000 vehicle-deer crashes per year in the state of Iowa, which equates to one out of every 73 accidents.
Trooper McCreedy says October and November are the highest months for collision rates involving animals.
