(Atlantic) Atlantic defeated Denison-Schleswig 12-0 in four innings and 12-2 in five innings in Hawkeye Ten Conference Softball on Monday in Atlantic.
Trojan pitcher Olivia Engler tossed a two-hit shutout in the first game. The junior allowed no runs on two hits, struck out eight and didn’t walk a batter. The offense provided plenty of firepower scoring 12 runs on thirteen hits.
Alyssa Derby, Madison Botos, Malena Woodward, and Kennedy Goergen went 2-2 at the plate with two singles. Caroline Pellett knocked a single and triple in her two trips to the dish. McKenzie Waters, Lauren Nicholas, Olivia Engler, and Reagan Pellett each added to the cause with singles.
Engler set the tone for the Trojans right out of the gate. The junior struck out the side in the top of the first, and the Trojans responded with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the frame. The home team scored three more in the second, five in the third, and ended the game early with one run in the bottom of the third to win 12-0 in four innings.
Hailey Mesick took the loss. Kira Langenfeld and Allana Arkfeld accounted for the two Monarchs hits.
Kennedy Goergen pitched the win for Atlantic in the nightcap. The junior allowed two runs on seven hits struck out three and hit a batter. The Trojans offense came through again with 12 runs on 16 hits. The home team scored six runs in the second and fourth innings to seal the deal.
The Monarchs scattered one run in the third and another in the fourth. Teryn Fink singled, Paige Kastner hit a single and a double, Kira Langenfeld, doubled, Allana Arkfeld punched a single, and Payton Goslar and Cambri Broderson each had singles for Denison-Schleswig.
Madison Botos belted two singles and a triple. Olivia Engler went 3-3 at the plate with two doubles and a single. Reagan Pellet ripped a single and a triple, and Lauren Nicholas stroked two triples. Not to be left out, McKenzie Waters laced two doubles, Kennedy Goergen hit a triple. Alyssa Derby, Caroline Pellett, and Malena Woodward each doubled for the Trojans, now 3-0 on the year, and 2-0 in the Hawkeye Ten Conference.
Atlantic hosts Clarinda on Thursday. Denison-Schleswig hosts Creston in a doubleheader on Thursday.
