(Cedar Rapids) Lane Lawson learned a lot and enjoyed his first season as a member of the Coe College football team.
The former Audubon Wheeler had a good experience with the Kohawks in his freshman campaign. “It was a fun and entertaining season. It felt good to finally get things under my belt after an anxious summer of wondering what I was getting into. I’m looking forward to getting some varsity minutes next year. It was a good season to get some experience and learn.”
He had a lot to get used to when going from 8-player to 11-player football such as the spacing on the bigger field. “I found myself in practice just trying to cover the whole field. That extra ten yards on each side of the field makes a big difference. My coaches were a big help.”
Lawson spent time as an outside linebacker and safety. He likes the role of being a coverage linebacker and feels that best suits his athletic ability. He’ll have his work cut out for him to get more varsity reps as a sophomore, but is willing to put in the work. “I’ve been going on some runs lately. I’ll do about two mile runs per day just to try and stay in the best physical shape for fall.”
Lawson embraced the opportunity to play some JV games to aid his transition to the next level. He says it was a good chance to make an impression on the coaches and clean up mental mistakes. Coe finished 6-4 in Lawson’s freshman season. All three of their conference losses were decided by two scores or less.
