(Red Oak) Creston-Orient-Macksburg captured the team title in a tight race at the Hawkeye Ten Conference Wrestling Tournament at Red Oak on Saturday. The Panthers scored 199.5 points, Atlantic-CAM finished 2nd with 185.0, Lewis Central, was close behind with 182.0, and Red Oak was fourth with 178.
The Panthers placed five wrestlers in the finals and came away with two individual titles. Jackson Kinsella, (182), and Sam Chapman, (195), stood atop the podium. Garon Wurster, (132), Kaden Bolton, (138), and Keaton Street, (145), were second.
“I don’t know if anybody gave us a chance,” said Downing. “It was kinda fun being the underdog and we embraced that. We have a bunch of kids starting to believe in themselves. It’s been a roller coaster ride when you have as many youngsters in the line-up as we do, and I’m proud of the way they wrestled today.”
Downing was hoping the five finalists would give his squad enough room to hold off Atlantic/CAM.” Getting five in the finals gave us some breathing room. I knew all the Atlantic/CAM guys on the backside had a chance to get third. I was just hoping we had enough of a gap.”
Atlantic/CAM crowned four champions. Easton O’Brien, (106), Aybren Moore, (113), Kadin Stutzman, (145), and Cale Roller, (285), won titles for the Trojans. (video interviews posted below the results).
“Four individual conference champions is the most we’ve had this season and a great accomplishment for those guys,” said Atlantic/CAM Head Coach Tim Duff. “This a tough wrestling conference and finishing second as a team is something for the boys to be proud of. The regular season is over so this is a nice exclamation point for the team.”
Lewis Central had five finalists and brought home three individual gold medals. Taber Dominquez, (126), Brian Paul, (132), and Tanner Higgins, (145), finished first. Jake Lear, (152), Dylan Koch, (285), were second.
Red Oak, crowned two champions and two runner-ups. Justin McCunn, (160), and Jonathan Erp, (120) earned titles. Dawson Bond, (126), Chase Sandholm, (113) and Bruce Lukehart, (170), were second.
Harlan had five finalists and crowned one champion. Carter Bendorf, (170), brought home the title. Luke Musich, (120), Zane Bendorf, (160), Nathan Henry, (195), and Jesse Schwery, (220), finished second.
Kuemper crowned one champion Shea Parkis, (138), Crew Howard of Clarinda won the (220) pound weight class.
