(Denison) Atlantic’s doubles team of Dylin Ball, Jacobi Harter, and Taryn O’Brien captured Hawkeye Ten Conference titles, helping the Trojans finish second with 24 points at the Hawkeye Ten Conference Tennis Tournament at Denison on Tuesday.
Clarinda won the team title with 26 points. Layla Hargis topped the field in No. 2 singles, and Chandy Notwehr earned a second-place finish in No. 1 singles. Barnes/Downey finished third in No. #1 doubles, and Hesse/Shepard finished fourth in No. 2 doubles
Ball and Harter defeated Jepsen and Olsen, 8-5, to win the No. 1 doubles title. O’Brien and Rose topped Collins and Rose of Denison-Schleswig, 8-4, to win the No. 2 championship. The Trojans also got a boost from Lily Willrich’s fourth-place finish in No. 1 singles, and Hope Hammontree’s sixth-place finish in No. 2 singles.
Atlantic Head Coach Mike McDermott says it was a great day for the team overall. He credits Willrich and Hammontree’s fourth- and sixth-place finishes, respectively, in the singles division as keys to the Trojans’ runner-up finish.
The highlight of the Conference Tournament was the Trojans’ two doubles teams.
Coach McDermott changed up the lineup for this tournament, playing Willrich and Hammontree in singles and pairing Ball and Harter and O’Brien and Rose.
