(Griswold) Stanton scored the final nine points of a back and forth first quarter and never trailed the rest of the way. The Viqueens downed Griswold Friday night in a Corner Conference girls basketball matchup by a final of 55-39.
The opening quarter featured a good start for the Tigers, a fire alarm, and six lead changes. Stanton’s inside presence with Jenna Stephens helped the visitors, now 9-1, take control of the game. Stephens scored nine of her game high 17 points in a key stretch that saw Stanton build the lead to as many as nine points early in the 2nd quarter. Stephens was joined in double figures by Kami Tibben and Hope Ogletree. Tibben went 8/8 from the free-throw line and her eight steals often led to points.
Griswold got 20 points from McKenna Wiechman. The freshman doubled her previous career high and is the only Tiger to score in double figures in a game this season. Griswold put up a season high 39 points, but saw their comeback hopes slip away late in the third quarter and into the fourth. The Tigers put together a 10-2 stretch that spanned from the end of the first half to the beginning of the third quarter. The swing helped them close within one point at 27-26, but Stanton responded with the next five points and swelled the lead to 40-32 by the end of the third. The fourth quarter saw the Viqueens lead by double figures more often than not. A 3-pointer from Stephens pushed the lead to 53-39 with 2:31 remaining and essentially put the game out of reach.
