(Cass Co.) The Cass County Board of Supervisors continued discussion this morning regarding the Veterans Affairs Director position.
Last month, Cass County Veterans Affairs Director Mitch Holmes announced his retirement, effective at the end of June. The Veterans Affairs Commission recommended hiring William Baylor, of Anita, as Holmes’ replacement.
The Supervisors had discussed possibly creating a 28E sharing agreement with Audubon County, but they are now considering a part-time position solely for Cass County.
Board Chair Steve Baier…
The Supervisors noted that the applicants for the position were made aware that, even though it was advertised as full-time, there was a possibility the position could become part-time.
Under Iowa Code, counties with a population of 30,000 or less are required to employ an Executive Director or Administrator to provide services for a minimum of 20 hours per week.
Mitch Brahms, American Legion District 7 Commander, is concerned about cutting the position from full-time to part-time.
The Supervisors discussed that there will be times when the Veterans Affairs Director may work more than 24 hours per week. Supervisor Steve Green wants to ensure that William Baylor would be compensated for that time.
William Baylor told the Board that, no matter what they decide, his biggest concern is making sure Cass County veterans receive enough time and support.
No action was taken on the matter today, as the Veterans Affairs Director position was only listed on the agenda as a discussion item.
