(Audubon) With three straight victories including a win over Treynor on Tuesday the Audubon girls basketball team is riding a large wave of momentum. We’ll have the Wheelers on the air Friday night when they travel to AHSTW.
Audubon is 4-1 overall and one of three unbeatens in the very early stages of the Western Iowa Conference race. Logan-Magnolia and Friday’s opponent, AHSTW, are both 5-0 overall. In their last outing the Wheelers picked up one of their biggest wins in recent memory, a 49-38 decision over Treynor. Coach Darran Miller says, “It was good. We talked about before the game that they are the defending Class 2A champs and not a lot of teams get the opportunity to play against a team that won state the year before. Until proven differently they are the defending champs so it was good to get a ‘W’.”
Sophomores Jaci Christensen and Aleah Hermansen combined for 26 points on Tuesday. Hermansen averages 12.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 3.3 steals per game. Christensen contributes 11.6 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 3.5 steals a night. Senior Leah Subbert averages 10.4 points and is shooting an unbelievable 20/21 from the free-throw line, that’s 95.1%.
The 3-1 record is a sharp improvement from last year’s 0-4 mark at this point. In fact, it’s the Wheelers best start since 2016-17 and they’ve already surpassed their entire win total from two seasons ago. Miller believes there’s still plenty of room to grow. “I don’t think we’ve played a complete game of our best basketball yet. Against Treynor we didn’t play well at all in the first half. It took a halftime motivational speech to get us going.”
South Central Calhoun was their only loss by a final of 46-39. In addition to the Treynor win they’ve beat ACGC, Tri-Center, and Missouri Valley. Two of the wins have seen the Wheelers put the 35 point running clock rule into effect. South Central Calhoun was a very strong foe and is now 5-0, AHSTW will be another big test. “They have athletes all over the court. It’s a huge challenge for us. We can not have a lot of mental or physical lapses throughout the game. They are a team that’s really good at doing what they do. The guards play really well and I’m really impressed with the post Kailey Jones. She’s really improved from last year to this year.”
Pregame coverage on Friday in Avoca hits the air at 5:45 p.m. The girls game will tip at 6:00 p.m.
