(Washington, D.C.) The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will host its 31st National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The DEA is partnering with more than 4,300 law enforcement agencies and other organizations, with more than 4,400 collection sites available nationwide.
Residents can dispose of unneeded, expired and unused prescription medications, including tablets, capsules, patches and liquid medications securely sealed in their original containers.
Syringes, sharps and illicit drugs will not be accepted.
The DEA says removing unused medications from homes can reduce the risk of misuse, accidental ingestion and potentially addictive medications falling into the wrong hands.
Since 2010, Take Back Day has helped Americans dispose of more than 20 million pounds of unneeded medications.
Residents can visit DEATakeBack.com to find a collection site. More than 15,300 pharmacies, hospitals and businesses also offer safe medication disposal year-round, along with permanent drop boxes at many police departments.
