(Oakland, IA) — It was Mason Houser’s break out night to lead Riverside over AHSTW in the Highway 59 Rivalry 27-8 in a Class A, District 7 match up on Friday night.
Houser looked like a Mack truck on the Riverside field — running 34 times for an incredible 336 yards and 4 TD to lead the Bulldogs to their 2nd district win in a row. And Riverside won despite going minus 5 in the turnover margin.
Neither team could score in the first quarter but early in the 2nd, the Bulldogs started at their own 29. They converted a 4th and 1 on an Peyton Amdor run. Houser then broke a 23 yard run to set up a 16 yard TD to make it 7-0.
AHSTW used a pass interference to get a first down but on 4th and 2 at their own 44, they rolled the dice and Taylen Hansen was stuffed for no gain. Riverside took over and Houser scored on a 21 yard TD run at the 2:17 mark and the Bulldogs led 14-0 at the half.
The Vikings could not move on their opening drive of the 2nd half and Riverside went down into the Heuss Distributing Red Zone but Peyton Amdor fumbled on a bad snap and Parker Krohn returned it all the way to the Riverside 8. However, AHSTW could not get it into the end zone and failed to convert on 4th down.
Riverside went all the way down the field but on a strange play on 1st and Goal, Houser got into the end zone but a fumble was ruled along with a holding call on Riverside. The fumble was recovered by AHSTW and the holding call was decline. The Vikes took over at their own 20 but went 3 and out.
Peyton Amdor for the Bulldogs threw his third INT of the game but again AHSTW could not take advantage — on 4th and 6 with 9 minutes left, Hansen’s pass was incomplete and Houser took it into the end zone on a 14 yard TD to make it 21-0 with 6:23 to play.
The Vikings finally got on the board on a drive that took about 2 and a half minutes and Kooper Krummel scored on a 4 yard TD to make it 21-8.
The Bulldogs got their last score on a 3 yard TD by Houser to finish the night.
