(Clarinda, IA) — In an effort to beat the heat, Clarinda hosted a cross country meet Tuesday morning and Harlan girls took home the team title while Riverside dominated the boys race. Harlan girls had 43 points ahead of Tarkio, MO with 77. Shenandoah 3rd with 79 and Atlantic won a tie breaker over Creston for 4th with 89 points. For the boys, the Bulldogs had 43 points with Creston in 2nd with 55 — Red Oak 3rd with 84 and Atlantic 4th 92 followed by Harlan in 5th with 96.
Reese Strunk of Creston was the girls champ at 21:32.87 with Lilly Mather of Shenandoah in 2nd place at 21:36.84. Mather just beat out Ashlyn Rau of Harlan at the line — Rau was 3rd ata 21:36.88 and Julia Heslink of the Cyclones was 4th at 21:53.60. Harper Wilson of Creston rounded out the top 5 (21:58.62).
Also for Harlan, Aspen Bieker got in the top 10 in 8th (22:44.08); Sadie Alberti was 15th (23:31.66); Josie Sonderman 18th (23:43.08) and Allie Anderson 21st (24:11.88). Also for the Cyclones Ava Freund 29th; Merry Sanduck 38th; Clara Schmitz 56th; Kenadi Dunn 60th and Aubry Christensen 69th.
For Atlantic girls, Gabrielle Engler was the top finisher in 6th place at 22:15.72; Kaitlyn Hickman finished 20th at 24:07.96; Lucy Northwick 25th (24:47.87); Ximena Mendez-Cordero 26th (25:19.97); and Cambry Van Ert also scored in 28th (25:22.29). Saige Coffman was 52nd; Gracelynn Kelley 55th.
Riverside girls did not qualify in the team standings — Azlyn Clark finished 17th (23:35.68).
In the boys race, Jeffrey Gross of Harlan outlasted Owen Fenner of Riverside by almost 3 seconds — 17:06.10 to 17:08.86. Emmanuel Grass of Red Oak finished 3rd at 17:14.06. Mason Betts of Atlantic was 4th at 17:16.91 and Ryder Baird of Creston rounded out the top 5 at 17:20.69.
Also for the Bulldogs: Cruz Jacquez was 7th (17:42.33); Eli Hudnall 8th (17:50.37); Trig Drahota 12th (18:36.25); and Colton Hering 16th (19:00.06).
For Atlantic, Gage Schroeder was 18th (19:09.67); Deklyn Kinney 20th (19:25.48); Kouper Kinney 27th (20:15.36) and Caleb Andersen 30th (20:31.13). In addition, Thomas Engler 32nd, John McCurdy 35th, Zander Hatley 39th, Nolyn Kinney 40th, Bentley Staiert 60th, Hudson Brock 62nd, Hunter Kinzie 65th, Wyatt Hoover 72nd, Alex Hoyt 74th, Dominic Elings 88th, David Blake 95th, Tyler Sweeney 96th, and Karter Ellison 97th.
For Harlan, Erik Heslink was 11th (18:02.9); Brogan Schechinger 17th; Nathan Sandquist 38th; and Reghan Christensen 49th.
Hayden Heitbrink of Red Oak was 10th.
The top finisher for Lenox was Santiago Zarate in 44th.
The top finisher for Fremont Mills was Wyatt Lemonds in 52nd.
