U.S. Maj. Brad Hovey Procession Route Announced For Today
(Des Moines, IA) — A central Iowa Air Force pilot who died in a test flight crash is returning to Iowa tomorrow. U.S. Major Brad Hovey was an Air Force Experimental Test Pilot who died in a B-52 test flight crash at Edwards Air Force Base on June 15. He was a 35-year-old husband and father born in Algona and raised in Adel. Members of the public are encouraged to line the streets of a procession route tomorrow from the Des Moines International Airport to the Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Adel. A public visitation will be held next Thursday. Hovey will be buried at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel.
Iowa National Guard Deploys Troops To Europe
(Des Moines, IA) — Nearly 80 Iowa National Guard members are being deployed to Europe. The troops will serve for a year in Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve. The soldiers will support the readiness of NATO allies stationed across the Baltic region. A send-off ceremony is being held in Des Moines on July 13th.
Iowa Election Tie To Be Broken By Drawing Name Out Of Hat Next Week
(Runnells, IA) — A city council race in Iowa will be decided by drawing a name out of a hat. In Runnells, southeast of Des Moines, the race between Corey Walker-Zepeda and Jake Dingman ended in a tie on election day. They each got 37 votes. By Iowa law, the winner will be determined by pulling a name from a hat. The Polk County Board of Supervisors plans to do the hat draw at their meeting next Tuesday.
Iowa Drought Map Mostly Unchanged Despite Heavy Rainfall
(Undated) — Iowa’s drought map this week is, for the most part, the same as last week. The new map shows only a slight reduction in drought and near-drought conditions in Northwest and Northern Iowa. Those areas didn’t get the heavy rain last week that caused flooding in parts of Central Iowa. Right now, about 69 percent of Iowa is drought-free, down about two percent from last week. The drought map released Thursday doesn’t account for any rain that fell Wednesday, including heavy rain that caused flooding in Northern Iowa.

Heavy snows in early 1993, followed by summer rainstorms, prompted flooding to begin on July 9th. The Raccoon River submerged the Des Moines Water Works, leaving 250,000 people without running water for nearly two weeks. Thousands evacuated the city, and the entire state was declared a disaster area, with $3 billion in damages.
