(Des Moines) Much of Southwest, West Central, and Central Iowa is under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather Wednesday, with storms expected to develop during the afternoon and evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, the greatest threat for severe weather is expected between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m.
The primary hazards include damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall, though forecasters say small hail and isolated tornadoes are also possible. Some storms could produce locally heavy rainfall, with isolated areas receiving 2 to 3 inches by Thursday morning.
The heavy rain could lead to flash flooding and urban or street flooding, especially in locations that receive repeated rounds of storms. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways and remember the safety message: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
Residents are encouraged to stay weather aware throughout the day by:
- Having multiple ways to receive weather warnings.
- Identifying a sturdy indoor shelter before storms arrive.
- Monitor changing weather conditions when spending time outdoors or camping.
- Be prepared to move indoors quickly if severe weather develops.
Additional rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected at times later this week.
The National Weather Service says its next scheduled forecast update will be issued by 5 p.m. Wednesday if significant changes occur.
