The law banning any physical interaction with a cell phone while driving went into effect on July 1, 2025. New data from Nationwide shows the number of screen-tapping interactions went down 13.6 percent, and handheld calling went down more than 9 percent. Nationwide says this reduction helped Iowa prevent an estimated 470 crashes, 3 fatalities, and $20.3 million in damages.

Man Pleading Guilty To Lacing A Lasagna, Giving It To A Pregnant Woman
(Decorah, IA) — A man accused of lacing a lasagna and giving it to a pregnant woman is pleading guilty. Prosecutors say Matthew Uthoff and Amber Snow, his wife, laced the food with oxycodone and gave it to the woman in December. Investigators say they were trying to get the woman to miscarry. Uthoff and Snow were facing charges including controlled substance violation, attempted nonconsensual termination of pregnancy and child endangerment. Snow pleaded guilty in May and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
ISU Launches Study On Menopause And Brain Health
(Ames, IA) — Researchers at Iowa State University are investigating how menopause can affect the brain. The study will examine how menopause may accelerate brain and blood vessel aging. It will follow 370 women in menopause to examine changes in brain blood flow and their link to cognitive function, biomarkers and overall brain health. Researchers hope the findings will help explain women’s higher risk of stroke, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
