(Des Moines) An Extreme Heat Watch has been issued for most of Iowa from 1:00 p.m. Sunday through 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, as dangerously hot temperatures and high humidity are expected to push heat index values above 100 degrees for multiple days.
The northwest corner of the state is under a Heat Advisory.
The National Weather Service warns that the prolonged period of excessive heat will significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses. Forecasters say the hot and humid conditions are expected to continue through much of next week and could extend into the Fourth of July weekend.
Officials urge Iowans to take precautions by drinking plenty of fluids, spending time in air-conditioned buildings when possible, avoiding prolonged time outdoors during the hottest parts of the day, and checking on relatives, neighbors, and others who may be more vulnerable to the heat.
Residents are also reminded never to leave young children or pets unattended in vehicles. Temperatures inside a parked car can become deadly within just a few minutes.
