(Elk Horn, IA) — Collin Bower had a near cycle against the Exira-EHK Spartans in Friday’s 12-4 win with a double in the first frame, a home run to left field, and a base hit in the fifth.
CAM was on the board quick with Zach Kauffman batting in Carson McKee on a double to left field, as the Cougars rallied to score five runs in the top of the first. Erik Almelien was given the starting call for CAM, retiring the bottom of the first in five batters and leaving a runner stranded. CAM didn’t slow down in the second, with cleanup hitter Kason Calhoun driving in two runs on a base hit to left. After a scoreless bottom of the second for the Spartans, CAM went right back to business scoring five in the third, capped off by a 2-run homer from senior Collin Bower.
The score was 12-4 through five innings, and the Cougars played sound defense in the sixth and seventh to keep the Spartans silenced. Head Coach Mick Long says it was nice to get the opportunity to put younger players in the game later on:
The win puts the Cougars at 14-5, the Spartans fall to 0-12, and CAM will now set their sights on the Prange Classic, where the Cougars will take on PCM and Woodbury Central. Long says the goal is to see some unfamiliar teams and some strong pitching:
The Cougars then host Coon Rapids-Bayard on Monday to finish their conference schedule, and cap off the regular season on Tuesday visiting AHSTW. CAM plays Riverside on July 8th in the first round of postseason play.
