(Council Bluffs) St. Albert and Atlantic split in a Hawkeye Ten Conference Doubleheader at St. Albert on Monday. The Falcons won the first game 6-3, and the Trojans won the nightcap 10-2.
In game one, the Falcons struck first in the opening inning when Dane Yrkoski delivered an RBI single to score Wade Beck for a 1-0 lead.
Atlantic answered in the second. Hudson McLaren tied the game with an RBI single that scored Zayden Parker, and the Trojans took a 3-1 advantage when Paxton Pross reached on an error that allowed Zander Killon and Keston Schmitt to score.
St. Albert responded in the third inning to even the score. Connor Holly’s two-run single brought home Cael Yrkoski and Bennett Johnsen, and Holly later scored on a groundout by Kason Shadden to give the Falcons a 4-3 lead.
The Falcons added insurance in the fourth when Cael Yrkoski singled to score Hank Turner, making it 5-3. Yrkoski added another RBI in the sixth with a double that scored Bennett Johnsen and extended the lead to 6-3, and that is how the game ended.
Atlantic scored three runs on six hits. Jack Muller led the Trojans with a perfect 3-3 at the plate. Keston Schmitt, Grant Petty, and Hudson McLaren each had one hit for the Trojans.
St. Albert scored six runs on nine hits. Bennett Johnson and Cael Yrkoski each had two hits, and Yrkoski drove in two of the six runs to lead the Falcons. Connor Holly, Dane Yrkoski, Avery Beck, and Brek Gentile each contributed one hit.
In game two, the Trojans exploded for ten runs on 12 hits. Kale Jensen went the distance on the mound for the Trojans, allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out 11 batters and walking three.
Atlantic used a late offensive surge to pull away for a 10-2 victory over St. Albert.
The Trojans struck first in the opening inning when Zayden Parker reached on an error that allowed Sawyer Tarrell to score, giving Atlantic a 1-0 lead.
St. Albert responded in the bottom half of the first. Cael Yrkoski delivered an RBI single to center field to score Wade Beck, and Connor Holly later reached on a fielder’s choice that brought home Yrkoski for a 2-1 lead.
Atlantic evened the game in the second inning when Jack Muller hit an RBI double that scored Hudson McLaren.
The Trojans regained momentum in the fourth when Kale Jensen launched a home run to center field, scoring Sawyer Tarrell and putting Atlantic ahead 4-2.
Atlantic broke the game open in the sixth inning. Paxton Pross singled to drive in Jack Muller, then later scored on an error. Zayden Parker also factored into the inning’s offense, as Atlantic capitalized on multiple opportunities to extend the lead to 7-2.
In the seventh, Atlantic added three more runs to put the game away. Paxton Pross singled to score Hudson McLaren and Keston Schmitt, and Kale Jensen added another RBI single that brought home Grant Petty for the final 10-2 margin.
Grant Petty went 3-3 at the plate, and Kale Jensen, Paxton Pross, and Sawyer Tarrell each had a pair of hits for the Trojans. Pross ended the game with three RBI, Jensen had a homerun and three RBI, and Tarrell drove in one baserunner. Keston Schmitt, Hudson McLaren, and Jack Muller each contributed one hit.
Wade Beck went 2-3 at the plate for St. Albert. Cael Yrkoski added the other hit for the Falcons.
