(Corning) Southwest Valley shut out Sidney 12-0 in five innings in a non-conference baseball game at Corning on Monday night.
SWV’s pitching staff dominated throughout the game, combining to allow just one hit while striking out 12 batters. Gavin Wetzel started on the mound and tossed 2 1/3 innings, allowing no hits and no runs while recording five strikeouts. Ethan Johnston worked 1 2/3 innings, surrendering one hit and striking out four. Wyatt Shires closed out the game with a scoreless inning, striking out three.
At the plate, the Timberwolves were led by Walker Bissell, who collected two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs. Johnston added a hit and three RBIs, while Wetzel and Shires each recorded two hits. Shires also drove in a run.
Brody Crozier, Caleb Owen, and Hudson Bissell each contributed a hit and an RBI, while Casey Jones added a hit.
SWV jumped out early, scoring three runs in the first inning on just one hit before breaking the game open later in the contest.
“There were a lot of good things out of tonight,” said the Timberwolves’ Head Coach Keegan Longabaugh. “The guys did an excellent job of throwing strikes. Pitchers did a majority of the damage defensively, striking out 12 in 5 innings. We tallied 3 runs in the 1st inning on just 1 hit. We finally timed the pitcher out and started roping the ball around the field. It was nice having the pitchers carry the load. That gave us the opportunity to get young guys some reps.”
The Timberwolves return to action tomorrow with a doubleheader at Martensdale-St. Mary’s.
