(Oxford, IA) — A Georgia man is facing theft and forgery charges in Johnson County after authorities say he deposited a forged check for more than 14 thousand dollars. Investigators say 24-year-old Keduse-Kumea Morgan’s mobile deposited a check tied to the Oxford Sale Barn in December, but the business says it did not write the check and did not know him. Court records show a warrant was issued in April, and Morgan was booked into the Johnson County Jail on Friday.
Iowa Prisons Bracing For Inmate Surge
(Des Moines, IA) — Iowa prison officials and union leaders are warning the state’s correctional system may not be prepared for a sharp rise in inmates under a new habitual offender law. The nonpartisan Legislative Services Agency projects Iowa’s prison population could increase by nearly 50 percent within three years. The state plans to build three new prisons, but union leaders say there are already more than 230 vacant positions across the prison system.
Silo Fire Draws Multiple Departments
(Aurelia, IA) — Multiple fire departments helped put out a silo fire in rural Aurelia on Friday night. Crews found a grain harvester on fire, with flames threatening nearby property and livestock. Gusty winds caused the fire to spread, and crews had to cut into the silo to reach a portion of it. No injuries were reported, and the cause has not been released.
Lahn Names Running Mate
(Belle Plaine, IA) — Republican nominee Zach Lahn has named farmer and state Representative Derek Wulf as his running mate in Iowa’s gubernatorial race. Wulf represents House District 76 and chairs the House Agriculture Committee. He is a fourth-generation farmer from Hudson and is serving his second term in the Iowa House. The announcement comes after Democratic nominee Rob Sand also selected a farmer as his running mate.
Zach Johnson Wins Principal Charity Classic
