(Council Bluffs)- The Pottawattamie County Supervisors unanimously passed a letter of support for a grant to improve the safety of some of the county roads through the small towns, and redesign Old Lincoln Highway. The supervisor approved their support at Tuesday’s regular meeting.
Pottawattamie County Engineer Andy Wicks says the county conducted a safety action plan to review crash history across the county and determine the roads most at risk of traffic accidents. He says the Old Lincoln Highway ranked number one in crashes with the most injuries, fatalities, and property damage.
Wicks says the safety plan includes tightening up the road and adding rumble strips on newly paved shoulders to improve safety. The plan would also include the Urban section through Crescent.
Wicks says the second step would be partnering with communities across Pottawattamie County to install push-button crossing beacons, enhancing safety for children as they cross intersections on their way to school.
The Federal Government would pay 80 percent of the costs of the improvements, and secondary roads would cover the remaining 20 percent. The grant submission deadline is the first week of June.
