Woman Shot In Friday Downtown Des Moines Shooting Dies Saturday
(Des Moines, IA) — The woman injured during a shooting in Des Moines on Friday has died. Police say Abdul Jabbar Jackson shot the victim, Jessica Henderson, and her dog before shooting himself. Henderson was in the hospital in critical condition, but succumbed to her injuries Saturday morning. Neither the dog or suspect survived. Investigators say Jackson also tried to shoot one of Henderson’s friends. Jackson had previously been arrested for first-degree harassment after Henderson reported him, but posted bond and was released just six hours before the shooting. In a statement, Henderson’s family says domestic violence is a public safety issue and urges the community to take warning signs seriously.
UI Student Critically Injured In Ped Mall Shooting Moved Out Of ICU
(Iowa City, IA) — The University of Iowa student critically injured in a shooting on the Ped Mall last month has been moved out of the ICU. Miranda Peters’ family provided an update to her condition on a GoFundMe page, which has raised more than 200-thousand dollars to help with medical bills. Peters’ sister says Miranda is showing signs of progress, but will still have a long recovery period. The suspect, 17-year-old Dumarian Marshawn Jones of Cedar Rapids, is still at large. He faces multiple counts of attempted murder for the shooting which left five people injured, including Peters.
Beagles Rescued From Ridglan Farms Will Be First Residents Of New ARL Rescue Facility
(Des Moines, IA) — Beagles rescued from Ridglan Farms in Wisconsin will be the first residents of a new Des Moines facility. The Animal Rescue League says 40 of the beagles will live in Iowa’s new Rescue Intake and Rehabilitation Center. The beagles are part of a nationwide rescue effort involving more than 15-hundred dogs removed from the Wisconsin breeding and research facility. The rehabilitation center, located in a renovated former horse barn, was redesigned to support the ARL’s growing number of large-scale rescue operations. ARL staff rescued around a thousand animals across Iowa in 2025.
Des Moines In Top 20 For Youngest Houses In Nation
(Des Moines, IA) — Des Moines has some of the youngest housing stock in the nation. A new study by research firm Construction Coverage ranks Des Moines 16th on a list of midsized metro areas with homes less than 15 years old. According to the report, just over 19-percent of homes in the metro were built after 2010. Almost 50-percent of Des Moines homes were built before 1980, while 15-percent were built before 1940. Iowa ranks 10th nationwide with nearly 60-percent of houses more than 45 years old.
Iowa Hospitals, Colleges Celebrating National Nurses Week Through Tuesday
(Iowa) — Hospitals and colleges across Iowa are celebrating National Nurses Week this week. Iowa is about six-thousand nurses short of its workforce needs, and the nationwide shortage is about 264-thousand. Several Iowa colleges are expanding nursing programs, including the University of Northern Iowa which has launched a new one-year nursing program. UNI officials say they hope to train about 200 nurses each year, with the program’s first graduating class expected to finish in spring 2027. National Nurses Week runs through this Tuesday, May 12th.
