(West Des Moines) The Iowa Economic Development Authority’s (IEDA) Main Street Iowa celebrated its 40th anniversary this evening at the 2026 Main Street Iowa Development Awards in West Des Moines, honoring outstanding efforts to revitalize downtown districts across the state.
Among the 18 Main Street Iowa Development Awards and 45 leadership awards presented, Corning and Coon Rapids stood out for their exceptional contributions to downtown revitalization.
Coon Rapids received two project awards: the Business Support Award (under 5,000 population) for its work as an American Discovery Trail Town, and the Façade Improvement Award (under $50,000) for the renovation of Four Twelve Main. These awards highlight the community’s commitment to strengthening local businesses and enhancing the visual appeal of its downtown.
In addition, Coon Rapids was recognized for reaching a $2 million milestone in private investment within its commercial district, reflecting significant local collaboration and strategic development.
Meanwhile, Corning earned the Business Recruitment Award (under 5,000 population) for its Adams Community Team Ignites Opportunities Now (ACTION) initiative, which has successfully attracted and supported new businesses. The community’s revitalization efforts also led to a remarkable $20 million in private investment, underscoring Corning’s transformative impact on downtown vitality.
The 2026 Main Street Iowa Development Awards highlighted the ongoing success and impact of Iowa communities in creating inviting, resilient downtowns. Corning and Coon Rapids, in particular, showcased how focused initiatives and investment can drive lasting economic and social growth in smaller communities.
