Teen Accused Of Threatening Violence Against Central IA High School Arrested
(Newton, IA) — A teen accused of threatening to commit an act of violence at a Central Iowa school has been arrested. Police say the 17-year-old boy made the threats against Newton High School in an online group chat, mentioning two specific individuals. Several students saw the threat and reported it to a School Resource Officer. The school was placed on a soft lockdown until the suspect was located and taken into custody in Eldora. The suspect is facing a felony charge of making terroristic threats, along with two misdemeanors.
Farming Accident Injures Woman In Greene County
(Greene County, IA) — A farm accident has left a Greene County woman fighting for her life. It happened around 12:30 yesterday afternoon just north of Redfield. The sheriff says a 32-year-old female was pinned between a cultivator and a pickup that had rolled forward. Life Flight transported the woman to a Des Moines hospital with life threatening injuries.
Family Of University Of Iowa Student In Critical Condition After Ped Mall Shooting Gives Update
(Iowa City, IA) — A University of Iowa student injured during a shooting in Iowa City’s Pedestrian Mall is still in critical condition. The victim, Miranda Peters’ sister says she was with her friends downtown when she was a bystander to a large fight. The suspect, 17-year-old Damarian Marshawn Jones of Cedar Rapids, is accused of firing into a crowd after the fight and injuring five people including Peters. Jones is still at large. Peters’ family says she has undergone one surgery and is still fighting after more than a week in the ICU. A GoFundMe for Peters’ family has raised almost 60-thousand dollars as of Thursday night.
Iowa House Passes Bill Requiring Citizenship Verification For All State Public Employees
(Des Moines, IA) — A bill requiring verification of U.S. citizenship and work eligibility for state employees heads to the Governor’s desk. The proposal also aims to tighten hiring and licensing checks within Iowa schools. The Iowa House passed the bill Wednesday, after the Senate approved it Tuesday. It was introduced after former Des Moines Public Schools superintendent Dr. Ian Roberts pleaded guilty to lying about his citizenship status on his job application. The legislation also requires county election officials to confirm Iowans’ citizenship with a federal immigration database before registering them to vote.
Large Bird Migration Expected Overnight Saturday
(Des Moines, IA) — A large migration of birds is expected over parts of the Midwest on Saturday night. Data from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology shows about 246-million birds, including sparrows, orioles, hummingbirds, and warblers, will migrate nationwide. The majority of the birds will travel in a path from Texas to northern Minnesota, flying over the entire state of Iowa and surrounding states. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources asks people to turn off unnecessary indoor lights during the migration to help birds travel smoothly.
