(Des Moines) Each spring, the National Weather Service (NWS) collaborates with local county emergency managers to conduct spotter training classes throughout Iowa. This evening, a session is scheduled in Audubon County, running from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at 106 North Jefferson Street in Exira.
Chad Hahn, a Meteorologist from the National Weather Service in Des Moines, emphasizes the crucial role that spotters play in ensuring community safety.
According to Hahn, reports from trained spotters on the ground provide valuable insights that boost the National Weather Service’s confidence in storm assessments, helping them understand what is occurring within the storm. The main focus of these training sessions is to educate prospective storm spotters on how to properly communicate with the National Weather Service, including what information to report and how to report it.
These training sessions are completely free and welcome both new and experienced spotters.
