Iowa State Patrol Vehicle Hit During Snowstorm
(Altoona, IA) — An Iowa State Patrol car is damaged after being hit by a vehicle during a snowstorm. A trooper had pulled over to the side of the road to help a stranded motorist when the trooper’s car was hit. A post on social media showed the damage to the patrol car and reminded drivers to slow down in dangerous conditions. No one was injured in the crash.
Bill To Help Agricultural Resalers Passes Through House
(Des Moines, IA) — A bill to protect businesses that repair farm equipment is working through the state House. House Bill 751 would require agricultural equipment manufacturers to provide parts at fair and reasonable prices to resalers. The bill is in response to a federal lawsuit that states equipment manufacturers have made their products increasingly sophisticated and dealerships are struggling to keep up with the latest technology. The bill was pass last week in committee by a vote of 18-5 and now heads to the full House.
Republican Survey Of Democratic Senate Candidates Draws Scrutiny
(Des Moines, IA) — A Republican survey on Democratic candidates for Senator is drawing scrutiny. The survey asks voters if they prefer Zach Wahls, who is endorsed by Bernie Sanders, or Josh Turek, who is backed by Chuck Schumer, and fails to acknowledge that Wahls was also endorsed by Elizabeth Warren. A memo from Republicans says the findings of the survey show the Democratic primary, “is more likely to consolidate around Wahls.” The primary election is scheduled for June 2nd. U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson is the favorite to win the Republican primary as the GOP attempts to retain the seat being vacated by incumbent Joni Ernst.
Department Of Agriculture Opens Applications For Farmer Bridge Assistance Program
(Washington DC) — A program from the Department of Agriculture to support crop growers is opening applications. The Farmer Bridge Assistance program is divvying up 11-billion dollars to help growers deal with trade disruptions and rising costs. Applications must be submitted online and distribution is expected to begin by February 28th. Enrollment for the program will be open through April 17th.
Demolitions Of Wallace Building Progressing Despite Delays
(Des Moines, IA) — The demolition of the Henry A. Wallace Building is progressing despite weather delays. Officials say its expected to be completely demolished in the spring. The building is well known for its reflective golden glass facing the Capitol building. It’s named after the only Iowan to ever serve as vice president. For people who worked there, it was known as the “sick building” because of issues with leaks, mold, contamination and deteriorating concrete.
