(Griswold, IA) — The Griswold CSD approved a price increase for school meals at their meeting on Monday. Superintendent Dave Henrichs says that the district was losing money on their school meals so the increase — while small — were necessary. He says a number of schools are facing similar problems — during COVID, schools were receiving more money to provide free meals but that is not the case anymore
According to Henrichs, Pre K through 12 breakfast goes from $2 to $2.15. Pre K through 5 lunch goes from $2.70 to $3.00. Grades 6 through 12 lunch goes from $2.90 to $3.20. Also a la carte items will go up 10 to 15 cents apiece. Henrichs says the changes will go into effect on January 1st.
Henrichs says that they did explore the idea of cutting food costs but the food staff is under a number of restrictions in regards to diet that there was no other option but to increase the prices. Henrichs did say the school has received a grant to purchase a refrigerated station for a salad bar.
