Memorials Begin Today For Iowa Air Force Test Pilot
(Adel, IA) — An Iowa native and Air Force pilot killed in a test flight will be honored today in Adel. A public visitation will take place at New Hope Church for Sergeant Major Brad Hovey. The visitation is scheduled from 1-7pm. The 35-year-old died in a B-52 crash on June 15 at Edwards Air Force Base in California. Hovey was born in Algona [[ al-GO-nuh ]], Iowa, and raised in Adel. A private funeral is planned for Friday. Hovey will be buried at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel.
Iowa’s Medicaid Fraud Elimination Task Force Had First Official Meeting Wednesday
(Des Moines, IA) — Iowa’s new Medicaid Fraud Elimination Task Force had its first meeting on Wednesday. Governor Kim Reynolds established the eleven-member task force by executive order July 1 and appointed Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird as its chair. The goal is to bring together leadership from state departments, law enforcement, and care organizations to prevent Medicaid fraud. Members will submit a statewide strategy for rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse of Medicaid funds by the end of October.
Iowa Getting $430K In 23andMe Settlement
(Des Moines, IA) — Iowa is getting almost $430-thousand-dollars of a multi-million-dollar settlement from 23andMe. Iowa is one of 42 states that filed a lawsuit accusing 23andMe of unreasonable data security practices that led to a data breach in 2023. The breach compromised genetic data for almost seven-million customers globally. Since the company filed for bankruptcy in 2025, settlement recovery has been capped at $18-million dollars.
Great Iowa Treasure Hunt Sets News Records, Recovers Sports Memorabilia
(Des Moines, IA) — This fiscal year’s Great Iowa Treasure Hunt set a couple of all-time records. Iowa State Treasurer Roby [[ ROBBY ]] Smith says $38.2-million dollars in unrecovered funds was returned to rightful owners, and the Treasurer’s Office processed over 53-thousand claims. The Treasurer’s Office also recovered items left in neglected safe deposit boxes and attempted to return them to rightful owners. An unauthenticated Cincinnati Reds signed baseball from the mid 1970s is among the interesting items recovered this fiscal year.
Former ISU Student Gets 15 Years for Cyberstalking, Child Pornography
(Davenport, IA) — A former Iowa State University student is sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for child porn and cyberstalking charges. 20-year-old Jack Erselius of Montezuma was arrested in January 2025. Federal prosecutors say he solicited people online to photograph, stalk, and sexually assault victims. He also shared victims’ locations and family members’ contact information with people he was attempting to recruit to carry out the assaults. Erselius pleaded guilty to receiving child pornography and 11 counts of cyberstalking.
Kids’ Day At Kinnick Just Less Than A Month Away
(Iowa City, IA) — Kid’s Day At Kinnick is just under a month away. The free, open Hawkeye football practice will be held Saturday, August 15. It’ll be the public’s first chance to see the team in action, ahead of the 2026-2027 season. More information will be announced in the coming weeks.
