(Atlantic) In 2019, a group formed a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a straightforward vision for the place they have made home: to shift the direction of Atlantic’s social and economic development opportunities by leveraging partnerships and strengthening social bonds within the community. The goal is to revitalize Atlantic through projects, services, and programs that will enhance the community and foster a sense of growth. SHIFT ATL started by renovating the Telegraph building (formerly known as the Downtowner) in November 2020. The group continued to remodel homes and pay off their loans promptly.
At Monday’s City Council meeting, First Ward City Councilwoman Emily Kennedy, a member of SHIFT ATL, reimbursed the city for its’ $100,000 loan to rehabilitate a home at 201 West 14th Street. Kennedy says this is the second house SHIFT ATL flipped in Atlantic.
Emily Kennedy says the profit gained from the sale will go towards two scholarships, plus a donation to Vision Atlantic to help the housing development project. Kennedy points to volunteers and two fantastic grant writers serving on the board of directors for the organization’s success and attempt to fill the needs of the community.
