(Atlantic) Atlantic standout athlete Ryan Hawkins is back in his hometown of Atlantic this summer after playing professional basketball in Pistoia, Italy. Previously, he excelled at Northwest Missouri State University and was part of a team that won three Division II National titles. He also helped lead Creighton to the round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament and was selected to the second-team All-Big East.
Afterward, Ryan signed to play professionally with the Toronto Raptors’ G-League squad and then signed a 10-month contract with an Italian team in Pistoia, Italy.
When he first traveled to Europe to play pro ball, Ryan wasn’t sure what to expect or what style of play he’d encounter. However, he found it fun and noticed that the game differs from professional-level play in America.
He embraced the chance to experience a different culture in the Tuscany region of Italy, although he had to adjust to a different lifestyle off the court.
Ryan is known for his active involvement in the community. He has organized several basketball camps, including a recent one in Atlantic. At the camps, Ryan encourages the participants to be willing to do what others aren’t willing to do.
The other message is to maintain a positive attitude.
He credits his mother for being a significant influence in his life.
In the last season, Ryan, a 6’8″ stretch-four player, averaged close to 10 points and four rebounds per game.
